Young people living in the Cabrach are being invited to apply for a grant to help with the cost of their studies.

Up to £1,000 is available to children and young adults to enable them to further their education at secondary school, college or university.

The Gordon Bursaries were established in memory of the late Charles Gordon of the Cabrach. Mr Gordon was the schoolmaster at Upper Cabrach School, before joining William Grant & Sons in 1903.

Pupils of Mr Gordon at the Lower Cabrach, Inverharroch Parish School.

In his business life Mr Gordon, who married Isabella Grant of Dufftown, enjoyed a successful career in his father-in-law’s business, expanding sales into the English market as well numerous other markets worldwide, but never forgot his roots in education.

Mr Gordon died in 1929 and in his will decided to support educational opportunities for young people in the remote Cabrach community.

The Gordon Bursaries are now administered by The Cabrach Trust, which was set up to develop a thriving community in the Cabrach – said to be one of the birthplaces of the Scotch whisky industry – and offering opportunities for both residents and visitors to enrich their lives.

Grant Gordon, great-grandson of Charles Gordon and Chairman of The Cabrach Trust, said: “The Gordon Bursaries have been in existence for over 80 years and my ancestor’s bequest has enabled us to continue to provide financial support for children and young people who live in the Cabrach and who want to continue with their studies.

“Charles Gordon was proud to be the Schoolmaster at the Upper Cabrach School and wanted to give something back to his local community.”
